Let’s talk about startups

Yes – it highlighted all the amazing benefits of what is different and innovative about web3 (well you don’t need me to tell you!) and then used the web2 yard stick to measure against…. Mmmm hello?

Yes – this is the issue. Web3 at its core is all about equality, decentralisation, democratisation of power, and YET – here we are, allowing startups who are truly innovative to be measured against the same perceived success factors and fundraising mechanisms that the web2 startups are.

So – I call for change. Let’s get this topic talked about. Let’s propose our own solutions.

This is not a mini manifesto – more of a talking point – to start thinking of a different world.

1- Let’s change the way we think about leadership. The ‘traditional’ model just doesn’t work any more….. is structure needed? Is it community/ democracy led?

2- Location. Do we need to be in an office? Do we need the 9-5? I was recently doing a talk and told the audience that – ‘you know what? I am qualified and competent at my job, I’m an adult – you can trust me to get my job done, I don’t need to be in your office between 9am and 5pm to do that.’

3- Financing: The traditional metrics of success – may not be relevant. Traction? Paying customers? Successful leadership team with experience? A growth strategy? What about more community funding, decentralised and democratised building, community traction?

If we can start the conversation, and educate about the non tech structural differences of web3 startups – then we might just help some of these 92% to change the way we interact for good.
