Argentinian Budget Airline Flybondi to Offer All Tickets as NFT Ticketing Takes Off

Budget Airline Flybondi is partnering up with TravelX to bring NFT tickets to all passangers. All e-tickets for the airline will be served as NFTs.

TravelX, a technology startup, is enabling Argentinian airline Flybondi to offer NFT tickets to its customers, with several other airlines expected to adopt this model by the end of the year. The NFT tickets allow customers to make name changes or transfer tickets to someone else.

Flybondi customers receive a confirmation email followed by a link to activate their Ticket 3.0. Each user creates an account associated with an Algorand address, and can pay a fee to change the name on the ticket or transfer it to someone else.

The NFT ticket may not be transferable within a certain time frame before departure, depending on a country’s regulations. TravelX has met with roughly 70 other airlines across Europe, Latin America, the US, Asia, and Africa about the NFTickets technology.

Flybondi Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Argentina, has announced the launch of non-fungible token (NFT) tickets, named “Ticket 3.0,” on March 31, 2023.

Ticket 3.0 offers a more flexible travel experience that allows passengers to modify their ticket ownership without restrictions. Customers can easily rename, transfer, or sell their tickets, providing greater autonomy and convenience.

The NFT ticketing technology is built on the Algorand blockchain and includes rules and conditions integrated into smart contracts. The airline believes that Ticket 3.0 will reduce customer service costs and increase revenue from trading fees. Passengers can purchase regular tickets on the airline’s website using fiat currency, which will then be synchronized as NFT tickets along with the regular tickets by TravelX.

Airlines Exploring Web3 Technology

The Argentinian lowcost airline isn’t the first airline to enter the world of blockchain and Web3 with many airline carriers opting to experiment with NFTs in the last two years.

Following announcements from Air Europa, Qantas, and airBaltic, Etihad Airways introduced a range of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Etihad’s collection is comprised of intricate 3D models of ten airplanes featuring its Boeing 787 Dreamliner livery, and is called EY-ZERO1. The collection is limited to 2003 NFTs, symbolizing the year of Etihad’s establishment.

Those who purchase one of the NFTs, priced at $349, will receive immediate Silver tier membership in the Etihad Guest loyalty program, as well as early access to upcoming NFT collections and metaverse products that are part of the airline’s Web3 strategy. Additionally, ten buyers will be awarded complimentary flight tickets.

The opportunities to engage existing passangers, service new markets and tap into innovative marketing activations is forcing the travel industry to look more closely at the metaverse, NFTs and blockchain technology.
