Tourism Transformed with SITEnetwork´s Ambitious Vision for a Virtual Future

Tourism is at a major tipping point. This year alone has seen mass protests due to over-tourism in some of our most loved destinations like Spain and Greece. Overcrowding, lack of accommodation for locals and the cost of living crisis have pushed locals to rebel against some of the seasonal tourism demand.

So how do we give travellers an authentic experience while also ensuring the local communities retain control over their precious heritage? SITEnetwork – a blockchain project using AI and Virtual Reality – is carving out its name as it reshapes how the world is explored.

At the heart of their vision lies the XPEDITION Token (XPED), designed to transform tourism from a consumption-driven industry into a community-centric, sustainable ecosystem.

A Virtual Revolution in Edinburgh

SITEnetwork is piloting its vision in Edinburgh, Scotland, focusing on the historic area around Edinburgh Castle. This densely packed cultural hotspot includes iconic attractions like the Scotch Whisky Experience, museums, and centuries-old streets.

But unlike traditional tourism efforts, SITEnetwork isn’t just building virtual replicas of these sites. Instead, they’re empowering locals to create highly accurate 3D models of their surroundings using nothing more than a smartphone camera.

Graeme Stevens, SITEnetwork’s chief commercial officer and author of the Metaverse Playbook for Tourism explained: “People don’t want plastic experiences; they want authenticity,” he went on “By giving communities the tools to digitise their own environments, locals retain control of how their stories are told and importantly how they benefit economically”.

Empowering Locals, Redefining Tourism

This community-driven approach goes beyond just recreating physical spaces. SITEnetwork leverages AI to fill gaps in these models, imagining what a street or tree might look like now based on historical data. Locals can even enrich these virtual spaces with narratives, hidden gems, or cultural knowledge that no international operator could replicate.

Damian Pike, SITEnetwork’s CEO and former VP of innovation for DHL explained “One of the biggest advantages of this decentralized model is self-governance, Over-tourism renders some areas unaffordable for locals, while under-tourism deprives hidden gems of vital income. By allowing locals to manage these digital spaces, we balance that disparity and put control back where it belongs,” he says.

Why XPED Matters

At the core of this ecosystem is the ability to empower creators and communities to access and trade both virtual and physical products and experiences. To facilitate this, the Expedition “XPED” utility token is a blockchain-based universal currency designed to enable seamless interactions between travellers, hosts, and digital spaces anywhere in the world without the complexities of local currency or exchange rates.

XPED will be used to facilitate bookings linked to local guides and allow businesses to monetize their virtual experiences via the SITEnetwork platform. In tandem with our core virtual platform, it will also allow visitors to pre-book tours and experiences at their chosen destination, and to virtually return to purchase real world products it may not have been practical to take home during their physical visit.

Creating authentic virtual experiences that scale

SITEnetwork isn’t just about showcasing major landmarks. The project is designed to grow organically, much like towns evolve around central hubs. Virtual visitors can teleport between hotspots maintaining spatial awareness and a sense of continuity. This approach ensures lesser-visited locations naturally gain attention, easing pressure on overcrowded areas.

“Tourism should feel like a local guide is showing you secret spots,” notes Graeme Stevens. “And locals, with their deep knowledge, are best positioned to create rich, authentic experiences. Our tools simply amplify their voices.”

SITEnetwork’s growing list of strategic partners such as TravelTech and the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions, highlight the model’s scalability and real-world impact. As one local business owner aptly put it, “XPED is a game-changer. Finally, we can showcase our city’s hidden treasures while keeping the benefits within the community.”

Global Implications

Tourism is an industry that is a crucial part of every economy that is at a critical junction. Chronic over-tourism has led to many major cities like Venice, Rome and Paris to introduce a tourism tax that has a negative impact on the visitor experience.

SITEnetwork is providing solutions to this growing problem. Its project extends far beyond Edinburgh. From Venice to Rome and even lesser-known gems worldwide, cities struggling with over-tourism could use this platform to redistribute visitor interest. At the same time, communities in under-visited regions can attract travellers seeking unique, meaningful experiences.

David Sime, formerly of Google and now SITEnetwork’s Chief Technical Officer states “It’s about using technology to solve real-world problems. SITEnetwork doesn’t just create virtual spaces; in combination with its XPED tokens it creates a host of opportunities for travelers, locals, and even the environment.”

SITEnetwork is already gaining a voice on a global scale. David was recently chosen to advise the United Nations on advancing Tourism and Economic Development using these very technologies. Named the “Citiverse” programme, the UN aims to explore projects like SITEnetwork to shape the use of emerging technologies like VR, AI and Blockchain in creating more efficient physical, digital and economic models for the worlds major cities.

What’s Next?

With its roots firmly planted in Scotland, SITEnetwork is already eyeing new territories like Miami, where its model can adapt to different cultural and geographic contexts. By combining AI-powered digital twins with blockchain governance, SITEnetwork is setting a new standard for immersive, ethical tourism.

For travellers, the XPED Token unlocks a seamless way to explore and connect. For locals, it ensures their voices are central to the tourism economy. For everyone, it promises a future of travel that’s more equitable, sustainable, and offers a new way to experience our most loved destinations.

The XPED token closed its initial private sale on December 17th after just 72 hours having sold out it’s 24 million XPED, at a value of €123,000. The second tranche of XPED went on private sale on the 23rd of December and a public sale via launchpad is planned in February.
