Test Driving and Buying Nissan Cars in the Metaverse

Leading Japanaese Car Brand Nissan Nissan has joined the growing list of car manufacturers venturing into the Web3 space.

The company recently filed four new Web3-related trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), covering its Infiniti, Nismo and Nissan brands. The filings reveal Nissan’s plans to develop virtual clothes, cars, headgear, trading cards, toys, tickets, and a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace for trading and minting NFTs.

The company also plans to offer metaverse advertising services and other entertainment services covering online video, images, artwork, tickets, audio, sounds, music, and trading cards. In addition, the company plans to create a website with information about its proposed NFTs and digital wallet software for use as a digital wallet.

Nissan’s Japan unit is also conducting a three-month “demonstration experiment” of its virtual store “Nissan Hype Lab,” where customers can “study, consult, test drive and purchase Nissan vehicles” while in the metaverse. The virtual storefront is accessible via PC or smartphone, and customers can create their customized avatars and interact with virtual sales staff. Customers can order the car and finalize purchase contracts through the virtual sales office.

In October 2022, Nissan filed five trademark applications for some of its prominent car models, including the Skyline, Z, and GTR, signaling plans for NFT-backed media, online NFT marketplaces and digital wallets.

Autosales industry in the Metaverse

Using their avatars, customers can now test-drive Nissan vehicles and consult with sales staff in the metaverse. Nissan is the first Japanese carmaker to launch a metaverse auto sales project and hopes to use the virtual space to attract more customers as the number of visitors to physical outlets continues to decline.

To access the Nissan Hype Lab virtual showroom, customers must visit a designated website on their computer or smartphone, choose their avatar’s features, and clothing before entering. Avatars are free to move around and inspect the car’s exterior and interior.

Other car manufacturers, including General Motors and Ford Motor Company, have also filed trademark applications related to NFTs, crypto, and the metaverse. Despite the current crypto winter and bear market, multinational corporations continue to push forward with trademark applications covering Web3, crypto, NFTs and the metaverse.
