According to a recent report by Newzoo and Mobile Premier League, paid competitive gaming (PCG) is the fastest growing segment of the gaming industry, expected to reach $16 billion by 2024. The report identifies several key components of PCG, including PVP gameplay, skill-matching, real money prizes, and skill-based gameplay.
The USA is the top market for PCG, generating 42% of revenue, while India accounts for 21% of the market but is home to the top three PCG companies. Skill-based gamers are more engaged and likely to spend more money in the long term, and India leads in this market with 58%.
Although PCG has a high churn rate, many players return to the genre after a hiatus. The report also highlights the strength of mobile gaming, forecasting that the mobile games market will account for $113 billion in revenue by 2024 compared to $67.7 billion for consoles and $41.9 billion for PC.
According to another recent report by Data.ai, the mobile gaming industry has reached a new level of stability that exceeds the pre-pandemic era. The company’s Q1 Gaming Index and State of Mobile Gaming 2023 reports, released this week, reveal that gamers are spending over $1.6 billion a week on games in the first quarter of this year. This represents a 28% increase in spending compared to pre-pandemic levels in Q1 2020. Additionally, gamers are downloading 1.2 billion titles per week globally.
Blockchain offers a transparent future for gamers
The integration of blockchain technology is a promising development for the future of casual mobile games. It provides a decentralized and transparent way for players to trade, purchase, and sell in-game assets. This allows players to have complete ownership and control over their virtual items, which are securely stored in an unalterable digital ledger. As a result, players can transact in-game items without fear of fraud or theft and without relying on centralized marketplaces or game developers to facilitate transactions.
Incorporating blockchain technology in mobile games opens up new possibilities for player engagement and monetization. For instance, developers can create games that reward players with cryptocurrency for achieving specific milestones or allow players to trade rare digital items on a secure decentralized marketplace. These are just a few examples of the innovative opportunities that blockchain technology can bring to the realm of mobile gaming.
As the mobile gaming industry continues to experience a surge in social and multiplayer gameplay, as seen in popular games like Among Us and Fall Guys, the industry will adopt new revenue and business models. This trend in PCG indicates that casual gamers are increasingly interested in connecting with others and participating in low-stakes competitions.
As technology advances, we can anticipate more games that encourage players to collaborate with friends, form clans, and compete in global tournaments.
