Interview with Artist Nanda Khiara
Can you tell us a story about what brought you to the world of NFTs?
As an artist who has worked in both fine art and digital art, my expectations for the art world have shifted in
recent years. With the emergence of NFTs, I have seen a significant shift in the way artists can monetize and
distribute their work, providing new opportunities for creatives to reach wider audiences and gain recognition
for their work.

My first exposure to crypto was in 2017, when I was a writer for G2 Magazine covering art and culture section. I was covering the London art Market in the summer of 2017, and wrote an extensive article on the trends, which included auction house like Sotheby’s, christies, bonhams, and the galleries in Mayfair. in addition to this, I wrote about the “Future of Art” would be shifted in exchange of crypto currencies. However, my editors at the time were sceptical about my ideas and believed that I was referring to the “black market” on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. They ended up cutting down my extended research on “Crypto art” and only included a few sentences in the final article, though everything else I wrote on the galleries and the major art organisations details were published.
Before the advent of NFTs, artists were largely reliant on galleries, exhibitions, and traditional sales methods to
showcase and sell their work. This often meant that artists had limited control over how their work was
marketed, and there was a significant amount of gatekeeping in the art world, with established galleries and
collectors dominating the market. However, with NFTs, artists have greater control over their work, and there is
a greater emphasis on decentralization and democratization in the art world. Artists can create and sell digital
art pieces directly to collectors, and the use of blockchain technology ensures that artists retain ownership and
control over their work.
NFTs have also enabled artists to tap into new markets, such as the crypto art market, and there is a growing
interest in the potential of NFTs to revolutionize the art world. As an artist, I am excited about the potential of
NFTs to provide new opportunities for creatives and to
challenge the traditional power structures of the art world.

As an artist, I believe it is important to approach the use of
NFTs with a critical and reflective lens, while also embracing
the potential of this technology to create new
opportunities for artists in the digital age. Looking back, it’s
interesting to see how far the art world has come since
then, with NFTs now at the forefront of the conversation
around the intersection of art and technology. As an artist
who has embraced digital art and NFTs, I am excited about
the potential of this technology to revolutionize the art
world and provide new opportunities for creatives.
However, I also believe it is important to approach the use
of NFTs with a critical and reflective lens, while also
acknowledging the history of “Crypto art” and the
contributions of those who were exploring these ideas long
before NFTs became mainstream.
What or who inspired you to pursue your career as an artist?

As an artist, I frequently express myself
through oversized canvases in fine art.
These works are imbued with my
ingrained and intuitive understanding
of change and evolution, which drew
me to also study Da Vinci’s seminal
works and philosophy on urban cities.
Critics have described my art as a
reflection of my Passion for Life,
capturing warm and vivid, profound,
and complex, lyrical, and romantic, and
even dark and mystifying themes that
reflect a deep sense of myself. I take
pride in surprising my audience with
new forms and maintaining a unifying thread through my diverse oeuvre, with an aura of mysticism and ever-evolving concepts.

My digital abstract art is another avenue through which I
love creating. I employ mixed media such as photography,
fine art, and digital art to create complex, vibrant, and
colourful pieces with a unique narrative. These works are
also inspired by my living experiences in Asia, the Middle
East, and Europe, which I hope to capture and convey
through my art. My creations always carry an element of
storytelling and or poems written about them. The lines,
strokes, brushes, colours, and themes in my artwork are
carefully crafted to relate back to the experiences of every
person’s life. Whether it’s a bold composition or a subtle
detail,
I strive to imbue my art with meaning and emotion that
resonates with my audience. By weaving stories and poems
into my work, I hope to create a connection with those who
view my art and inspire them to reflect on their own lives
and experiences. Ultimately, I believe that art has the power to
evoke deep emotions and connect people on a level that
transcends language and culture, and I aim to harness that
power through my work.
Alongside creating visual art, I also write poetry to accompany
my pieces. Writing poetry about my artwork allows me to delve
deeper into the emotions and experiences that inspired the
piece, and it helps me to connect with my audience on a more
personal level. Whether it’s a simple haiku or a longer narrative
poem, I take great care in crafting the words to convey the
essence of the artwork. I believe that combining visual art and
poetry creates a multi-dimensional experience for the viewer,
allowing them to appreciate the work from different angles and
perspectives. Overall, I strive to create artwork that is not only
visually striking, but also emotionally resonant, and poetry is a
powerful tool in achieving that goal.
What are some of the most interesting or exciting NFT projects you are working on now?
My current portfolio of digital art includes four series.
“A Beautiful Mind” featured at NFT NYC London & NYC – 2022
My debut collection, “A Beautiful Mind,” delves into the intricate world of human thought
processes.

Inspired by the dynamic nature of daily
thoughts, the collection reflects their
influence on our emotions and actions.
From negativity to randomness, these
thoughts shape our mental landscape.
This collection draws inspiration from
Generation Z and the neurodivergent
community, aiming to capture their
unique perspectives. Each piece uses
colors to represent emotions like
serenity, passion, leadership, and more.
Comprising 15 editions grouped into
five themes, the collection explores
diverse aspects of daily thoughts. I plan
to continue exploring this theme, using innovative techniques.

The metaverse gallery hosts these
creations. Additionally, I’ve crafted two
sculptures as extensions of the
collection’s essence.
“Rubik’s Tree,” an interactive
installation, challenges visitors to
engage with puzzles, promoting mental
neutrality and calmness. “Trapped
Mind,” another sculpture, symbolizes
the struggle with persistent thoughts, resonating with many.
In essence, “A Beautiful Mind” seeks to visually express the complexities of human thought,
inviting viewers to introspect and engage with their own mental landscapes.

Was there a time when you did not believe in yourself? How did this impact your choices?
There was a period where I struggled with self-doubt, which significantly influenced my decisions. It made me
hesitant to pursue certain opportunities and projects that I felt were beyond my capabilities. However, I
realized that this mindset was holding me back. Over time, I worked on building my confidence and seeking
support from mentors and peers. This shift in perspective allowed me to embrace challenges and take
calculated risks, ultimately leading to more fulfilling choices.
So, how are things going today? What is your recipe for success?
Today, things are on an exciting trajectory. The recipe for my success combines passion,
persistence, and adaptability. I’ve learned to stay curious and open to new learning
experiences. Continuous improvement and staying up to date with industry trends have
been crucial. Also, surrounding myself with a supportive network and cultivating a positive
mindset have played pivotal roles in my journey.

For NFT artists embarking on their journey, I’d recommend these tips:
• Education First: Take the time to understand the NFT ecosystem, from blockchain
technology to platforms. Knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions. I
personally completed a master’s course on web 3 and blockchain technology before
embarking into the world of NFT’s
• Authenticity Matters: Create art that resonates with your identity and style.
Authenticity sets you apart in a crowded space.
• Engage with the Community: Connect with fellow artists and collectors. Networking
helps you learn, grow, and gain exposure.
• Patience and Persistence: Success in the NFT world takes time. Be patient and
persistent through the ups and downs.
What are your “3 things I wish someone told me before I minted my first NFT,” and why?
I have included four pieces of advice I wish I had received before minting my first NFT are:
• Understand Gas Fees: Knowing about gas fees and how they impact transactions is
crucial. High fees can eat into your profits, so plan accordingly.
• Market Research is Key: Research the NFT market and trends thoroughly before
minting. This helps you gauge demand and set appropriate pricing.
• Community Engagement: Building a supportive community is vital. Engaging with
collectors and fellow artists enhances visibility and creates lasting connections.
• Invest in a Hard Wallet: Investing in a hard wallet protects one from scams and gives
you greater control to know that your hard-earned funds are safe and protected.
Can you tell our readers what it is about the work you’re doing that’s disruptive?
• The work I’m engaged in is disruptive due to its fusion of innovative technologies and
traditional artistry. By leveraging blockchain and NFTs, I’m challenging traditional
notions of ownership and value in the art world. This disruptive approach empowers
artists with direct access to global markets, fosters new ways of collecting and
investing, and redefines how art is appreciated and experienced. It’s a transformative
shift that’s reshaping the landscape of creativity and commerce.
• In addition to this, the message I am sending with my art is also disruptive – makes
one think of the future, our climate, our universe as well as the concepts of DEI
(Diversity, Equality and Inclusion)
In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges faced by artists and the NFT industry today?
• The emergence of NFTs has brought about a shift in the art industry, providing artists with new
avenues for exhibiting and selling their work. The NFT market boom has allowed artists from all
discipline to reach wider audiences, transcending geographical barriers and unlocking previously
untapped revenue streams. The metaverse has further amplified this trend, enabling creators to
showcase their work in virtual spaces and reach audiences from all corners of the globe.
• Additionally, the use of AI has also made it possible for artists to create new works of art and push
the boundaries of traditional art forms. Collaborations and partnerships with brands have also
become increasingly common, with artists and corporations joining forces to create unique and
impactful marketing campaigns that blur the lines between art and commerce. The NFT market
boom has not been without its challenges. The ease of access to NFTs has led to a flood of new
artists, many of whom may not have had formal training or experience in the art world. While this
has provided a platform for previously marginalized voices, it has also led to a saturation of the
market, making it difficult for artists to stand out and for buyers to navigate through the vast
amount of available artwork.

• Furthermore, the volatility of the market and the recent downturn has highlighted the risks
associated with investing in NFTs. Many artists who jumped on the NFT bandwagon hoping to make
a quick profit have disappeared from the market, leaving behind a trail of unsold artwork and
unfulfilled promises. Despite these challenges, it is important to note that the NFT market is still in
its early stages, and there is much
potential for growth and innovation.
As the market matures, we can expect
to see more genuine artists come
forward, leveraging the power of
NFTs to showcase their work and
connect with audiences in new and
exciting ways. It is important for
artists and buyers alike to remain
informed, educated, and discerning
as the NFT market continues to
evolve.

• While the NFT market boom has
undoubtedly opened new
opportunities for artists, it is
important to note that it has also
raised questions about the
commodification of art and the
role of technology in the creative
process. As the industry
continues to evolve, it is essential
for artists, collectors, and
stakeholders to remain mindful
of these issues and work towards
creating a sustainable and equitable ecosystem that benefits all.

• In conclusion as an artist, I am excited about the potential of combining fine art, digital art, music,
and fashion to create new and innovative works that push the boundaries of traditional art forms.
I believe that these collaborations will provide a unique opportunity for artists to showcase their
creativity and express themselves
in new and exciting ways. Also, with
the emergence of digital identity – it
has opened new possibilities for
artists to connect with audiences
and build their brands in the virtual
world. With the rise of Web3 and
the metaverse, artists can create
digital personas that transcend the
physical realm, enabling them to
showcase their work in virtual
spaces and reach audiences from
all over the world.

• Looking to the future, I believe that
artists who embrace these new
technologies and collaborations
will have a significant advantage in
the art world. By staying on the
cutting edge of innovation and
experimentation, artists can
leverage the power of digital tools
and platforms to create unique
works of art that capture the
attention of collectors and
audiences alike. As the art world
continues to evolve, I believe that these artists who want to succeed and thrive in the years to come.
