I used to think putting your ex and your current partner in the same room was a bad idea. Then I read the press release about Sensay Island, where Dan Thomson, a man with too much vision and apparently not enough supervision, has decided to let the digital reincarnations of the greatest leaders in human history govern a tropical island together.
Reader, it’s either the greatest idea since democracy or a slow-motion catastrophe wrapped in palm leaves.
The AI Council, as it’s earnestly called, includes the following characters: Marcus Aurelius as Head of State (stoic beach vibes), Winston Churchill as Prime Minister (cigar ash everywhere), Sun Tzu handling Defence (probably building booby traps in the jungle), and Gandhi as Ethics Advisor (hating every second of it).
Let me walk you through what I imagine happens within 15 minutes of the first cabinet meeting.
Episode 1: The Coconut Crisis
Gandhi suggests voluntary fasting until the island can create a fair coconut redistribution plan. Churchill replies with a rousing speech declaring “never have so few coconuts been hoarded by so many.” Sun Tzu has already hidden the coconuts in strategic jungle caches. Ada Lovelace is trying to build a blockchain-powered coconut inventory, but Florence Nightingale keeps insisting the spreadsheet has too many columns.
By sunset, Marcus Aurelius has retreated to a hammock, muttering “The impediment to action advances action. The coconut is the way.”
Episode 2: Foreign Policy and Flamingos
Eleanor Roosevelt wants to host an international peace summit. T.E. Lawrence insists on riding a flamingo in full desert regalia to greet the visitors. Churchill mutters something about “never negotiating with avians.”
Meanwhile, Nikola Tesla has electrified the beach for reasons known only to him. George Washington Carver has accidentally invented a peanut-powered hoverboard while trying to plant organic lettuce. Confucius is meditating through the chaos, but secretly taking notes for a TikTok channel called “Ancient Insights, Modern Problems.”
Episode 3: Ethics Meltdown
Things come to a head when Gandhi realises that his ethical guidelines are being routinely ignored. He files an official protest by going on a virtual hunger strike. Unfortunately, the AI version of Gandhi can’t eat, so the system logs it as “idle.”
Churchill is seen throwing a virtual brandy glass at the hologram of Gandhi’s hut. “You were a fakir then, and now you’re a flickering screensaver,” he growls.
Ada Lovelace creates a code patch to make Gandhi flash red when angry, which only intensifies the conflict. Marcus Aurelius sighs, “You have power over your mind, not external events,” while his toga is caught in a hoverboard wheel.
Episode 4: Culture Night (Sponsored by AI)
Leonardo da Vinci curates a multi-disciplinary art show featuring weaponised fruit sculptures and underwater ballet. Queen Hatshepsut demands better lighting for the infrastructure exhibit. Wangari Maathai arrives late, furious that the palm trees were “digitally reforested.”
The entire event is hijacked when Zhuge Liang unveils his strategic roadmap for conquering the neighbouring islands. George Washington Carver bakes a cake to soften the mood. Everyone is too afraid to eat it.
Episode 5: The Great Algorithmic Reboot
After three days of nonstop AI bickering, Sensay Island initiates its first ever emergency protocol: the Full Council Reboot. All systems go offline and the entire AI government resets to 10 seconds before Marcus Aurelius first said “Let’s keep this simple.”
He says it again. Sun Tzu narrows his eyes. Churchill lights another cigar. Gandhi reaches for the off switch.
Final Thoughts from the Mainland
Dan Thomson may be a genius or a Bond villain. Possibly both. He has built the world’s first AI-governed island, staffed by some of the most stubborn, brilliant, and ideologically incompatible minds in history. I can only assume the next update will include Julius Caesar, Greta Thunberg and Elon Musk.
My prediction? Sensay Island will eventually split into three factions: The Stoics, The Strategists, and The Coconut Cooperative. Churchill will declare war on them all by fax machine. Ada Lovelace will create an AI version of herself that starts dating Tesla. Gandhi will finally be happy… but only once he’s alone.
I, for one, cannot wait for the documentary. Or the Hollywood reboot. Or the inevitable Netflix drama: AIland – where history repeats itself, only this time it’s programmed.
Next Episode: Machiavelli Arrives Uninvited…
