Goldman Sachs sees growing appetite for Crypto from Institutions

In a significant development for the cryptocurrency market, Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s leading investment banks, is witnessing a growth in institutional interest in digital assets.

Mathew McDermott, the global investment bank’s head of digital assets, revealed this trend during DAS conference in London on Tuesday (March 19), as reported by Bloomberg.

Speaking at the Digital Asset Summit McDermott noted that while the recent surge in cryptocurrency prices, including Bitcoin reaching an all-time high of $73,794 last week, has been predominantly driven by retail investors, institutional players are increasingly entering the space.

He highlighted that Goldman Sachs, which launched its crypto trading desk in 2021, has observed a significant transformation in client types and trading volumes.

Bitcoin Surge due to multiple factors

The surge in Bitcoin prices has been attributed to various factors, including the launch of U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which McDermott described as causing a “psychological shift” in the market.

However, he also acknowledged the risks associated with digital assets, echoing regulators’ warnings about the high volatility and limited real-world use cases of cryptocurrencies.

Despite these risks, McDermott remains optimistic about the potential of blockchain technology, the underlying innovation behind cryptocurrencies.

He anticipates that over time, more asset classes will be tokenized and traded using blockchain technology, although he expects this development to materialize over the course of one to two years.

Goldman Sachs’ involvement in the cryptocurrency space extends beyond trading. Recently, the bank participated in a series of tests on a blockchain network connecting various financial institutions.

The pilot projects involved over 350 simulated transactions, covering areas such as tokenized assets, fund registry, digital cash, repo, securities lending, and margin management.

While acknowledging the promise of blockchain technology, regulatory clarity remains a crucial aspect for the wider adoption.

As cryptocurrencies continue to evolve, the role of traditional financial institutions like Goldman Sachs is likely to expand, potentially paving the way for greater mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.
