SITEnetwork and XPED Earn UN Recognition for Innovation in Tourism and Economic Development

In a major endorsement of technological innovation for global good, SITEnetwork and its parent platform XPED have been officially recognized by the United Nations as a leading exemplar in the use of virtual worlds and AI to drive sustainable economic development.

Announced during the recent UN Virtual Worlds Day in Turin, SITEnetwork was named one of only ten initiatives worldwide selected for inclusion in the UN’s Citiverse Use Case Taxonomy, a definitive guide to projects pioneering the use of immersive technologies in support of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SITEnetwork, which operates as a Social, Interactive Twin Economy, stood out for its unique ability to empower local communities and cities across the globe to digitally showcase and monetize their cultural, economic, and social assets. The initiative was specifically praised for aligning with Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

UN Initiative on Virtual Worlds and AI

The recognition comes as part of the UN’s Global Initiative on Virtual Worlds and AI, which aims to support governments, cities, and innovators in tackling real-world challenges through cutting-edge technologies. Over the past year, the initiative has evaluated thousands of projects from around the globe. SITEnetwork not only made the final cutbut was also listed foremost among the selected use cases presented to the UN governing board.

The UN working group cited SITEnetwork as a “key fixture” in its taxonomy, emphasizing the platform’s ability to foster economic resilience, address regional unemployment, promote environmental stewardship, and even contribute to education through immersive and interactive digital experiences.

“This recognition is not just an honor it’s a validation of our vision,” said Graeme Stevens, Co-Founder of SITEnetwork. “We are committed to leveraging our technology to empower communities, promote sustainable development, and help realize the UN’s vital goals in the years ahead.”

With this designation, SITEnetwork is now part of a global conversation on how virtual innovation can solve pressing global issues positioning it as a trailblazer in the next chapter of digital economic evolution.

Travel and tourism, often overlooked in the blockchain conversation, is emerging as a key industry for decentralized innovation. Projects like SITEnetwork, Dtravel, and Sleap.io are stepping up to reshape the narrative, bringing blockchain’s transparency, efficiency, and community ownership to sectors like accommodation, experience booking, and destination management.

By bridging digital economies with real-world travel infrastructure, these platforms are unlocking new revenue streams, increasing traveler trust, and creating more resilient local economies.
