Talking to Virtual Barry: David Burden on Digital Twins, Identity and Crypto Futures

David Burden is not your average author. He is a quietly brilliant British consultant who writes about death, identity and artificial intelligence through the lens of virtual humans. He is also one of the rare people who has built a digital replica of himself. Not once, but several times.

“I’ve created my own digital replica several times,” he told me matter-of-factly. “The technology keeps moving on.”

Burden is the author of several books, most notably Virtual Humans, co-authored with Professor Maggi Savin-Baden of Oxford University. The two originally collaborated on a project for the UK Ministry of Defence, exploring whether it was possible, or even desirable, to create a copy of a person, not just their voice or image, but their knowledge, tone and reasoning. In short, a talking, thinking, semi-permanent digital twin.

The real-world challenge was succession planning. Military officers rotate roles every two years. They may be posted to remote locations where it is impossible to phone their predecessor for advice. “But what if you could just speak to a digital version of them?” Burden asked.

That was the genesis of “Virtual Barry,” the first prototype based on a real employee. “We had something that looked like him, sounded like him, contained a lot of his knowledge and then the question hit us. What happens if the real Barry gets hit by a bus tomorrow?”

The thought experiment quickly grew into an ethical minefield. Who owns virtual Barry? His family? His employer? Should he be deleted, archived, or even rented out? Could you still talk to him? Would you want to?

Burden admits the real Barry was less than delighted at his digital alter ego’s fame. “The real Barry is probably quite annoyed,” he said, “because virtual Barry is now more famous than he is.”

These questions became the basis for Burden’s later work, including The Digital Afterlife, co-edited with Savin-Baden. That volume approached the issue from moral, technical and even religious angles. “We didn’t come to conclusions,” he explained. “But the questions are powerful.”

He often asks students whether they would want a digital copy of themselves to survive after death. The responses are polarising. Some welcome the idea, others recoil. Yet when asked if they would want a copy of a loved one, most still say no. “Maybe it’s the idea of your parents tutting from beyond the grave,” Burden joked.

And yet in some cultures, such as South Korea, families have embraced virtual reality to ‘reunite’ with deceased children. In societies where ancestor reverence is the norm, the notion of extending contact through technology is not just tolerated but welcomed.

For Burden, this is more than theory. He is already preserving his memories, compiling photo yearbooks, and thinking about the legacy he might leave behind. “If I end up with dementia,” he told me, “I want my virtual twin to help carers understand who I was.”

This is where his ideas overlap with crypto and blockchain. The challenge of storing identity securely, enabling access selectively, and preserving knowledge across generations is not so different from the problems blockchain is designed to solve. Burden himself sees the link. “What I’m waiting for,” he said, “is selective disclosure. A bot that can share different levels depending on who’s asking.”

Selective disclosure is at the heart of zero-knowledge proofs in cryptography, where a user can prove something is true without revealing unnecessary details. The concept, well understood in crypto circles, may become equally vital in the future of digital humans. A carer may need one view of Burden’s history, while a researcher or family member might require another. Privacy, context and consent are everything.

Burden also recognises the utility of persistent identity. In blockchain, identity can be anchored on-chain, whether as a decentralised identifier (DID) or a non-fungible token (NFT). These tools could just as easily represent a digital twin, ensuring that ownership is clear and tamper-proof. In his words: “Virtual humans are there all the time. On your phone, on your screen. They remember your stories.” That kind of persistence echoes the permanence promised by distributed ledgers.

There are commercial implications too. If a digital twin embodies valuable knowledge, can it be licensed or monetised like any other asset? Does it become intellectual property, a form of digital capital? In Burden’s original MOD project, the question was about organisational succession. In a broader market, it becomes one of digital labour and rights.

His thinking extends naturally to the metaverse. While the hype has waned, Burden offers a grounded definition. “To me, it’s about places where you have agency,” he said. “It’s not just a game. It’s where you can build, interact, meet. And you remember it, because it feels real.”

He described a virtual garden where readers can explore his books. Each chapter becomes a stepping stone, each idea a landscape. “The nice thing is, you might bump into someone else reading the same chapter. You start talking. It’s like a gallery. That sense of presence, that’s what makes it stick in your memory.”

This overlaps again with blockchain. In metaverse environments, ownership of land, assets and even experiences is increasingly tokenised. If you build a garden of ideas, why shouldn’t the paths, benches or even conversations have some provable provenance? Burden is less concerned with monetisation than with memory, but the crossover is clear.

His role as an advisor to Sensay, an AI platform building advanced digital twins, further underlines the direction of travel. “What they’re doing is very close to how we approached it in the MOD project,” he said. “It’s one of the few platforms where I can really build what I want.” His own digital twin is already live on his website, answering questions and engaging in real time. A more personal version remains private.

Again, the parallels with crypto are striking. A public wallet, visible to the world, sits alongside private keys that remain hidden. Different layers of disclosure, different contexts of trust. Burden’s digital life is already structured along similar lines.

At the end of our conversation, I asked if he could imagine himself chatting to his digital twin in old age. He smiled. “I suppose that wouldn’t be the worst outcome, sitting in my armchair, chatting to myself. At least I’d have someone who understands me.”

David Burden’s work shows how digital humans, identity and blockchain are converging. The technology is not about flashy robots or headline-grabbing gimmicks. It is about the deeper human need to preserve memory, dignity and continuity. “It’s not about immortality,” he reminded me. “It’s about use. About creating something that helps someone else, even after you’re gone.”

In a world racing towards AI everything, Burden is doing something quietly radical. He is making the future personal. And as crypto and digital identity mature, his vision of selective, secure, persistent digital selves may be closer than we think.
