Spotlight on Midnight: Charles Hoskinson Leads the Call for Rational Privacy in Web3

“No one ever got fired for buying Midnight.” It wasn’t a planned line, but when Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of Input Output, delivered it at Consensus on the Spotlight Stage, it stuck. The room chuckled, but the gravity of what he and his co-panelists were saying about blockchain, privacy, and cooperation was undeniable.

Midnight is not just another privacy chain. It’s a vision of a cooperative, interoperable Web3 world where rational privacy is a foundational principle rather than an afterthought. The panel brought together Hoskinson, Ben Beckmann (CTO, Shielded Technologies), Eran Barak (CEO, Shielded Technologies), and Fahmi Syed (President, Midnight Foundation), moderated by journalist Jillian Godsil. The goal of the session was to lay out the case for a future where privacy, compliance, and usability converge.

The Case for Privacy in a Transparent World

Godsil began by posing a foundational question to Hoskinson: what inspired the creation of Midnight, and what problem was it designed to solve?

Hoskinson replied with characteristic insight. “I’ve been in this space a really long time. Long enough to remember when nobody cared about crypto. Now we’ve got over 550 million users and nation states paying attention. But we’ve hit a wall, public blockchain infrastructure doesn’t support real-world applications.”

That wall, he explained, is privacy. “Do you want a stablecoin where everything you’ve ever bought is recorded forever and viewable by anyone? You can’t do healthcare, finance, or supply chains with that.”

He described the early vision of a programmable blockchain that could support private smart contracts with selective disclosure, technology that could bridge the gap between public transparency and real-world confidentiality.

“This idea began six years ago,” Hoskinson said. “We had to think: how do we build a programmable privacy system, how do we handle disclosures, and how do we connect to other chains? That became Midnight.”

Not a Coin, a Meta-Chain

Godsil invited Beckmann to explain what makes Midnight distinct from privacy coins.

Beckmann, the CTO of Shielded Technologies, said, “Midnight is not a privacy coin like Monero or Zcash. It’s a confidential computing platform with hybrid smart contracts.”

He described how Midnight allows developers to create contracts that combine private logic with public auditability. “You can perform proprietary calculations and submit proofs to the chain, without revealing the sensitive data.”

Godsil followed up: was that what they meant by a hybrid contract?

“Exactly,” said Beckmann. “Midnight supports both shielded and unshielded assets. We separate the public utility token NIGHT from the private resource token DUST. That distinction allows us to support real-world use cases across chains.”

Hoskinson elaborated further. “It’s all about cooperative tokenomics. If you’re an Ethereum dev, you can pay in ETH. Solana devs pay in SOL. It should feel native, not adversarial.”

Shielded, Not Siloed

Turning to Barak, Godsil asked why privacy is non-negotiable for blockchain to evolve.

Barak, CEO of Shielded Technologies, emphasized the compliance challenge. “My background is in financial services, and I’ve built systems for the biggest players. Blockchain can’t go mainstream if it violates regulations like GDPR. Midnight embeds privacy at the protocol level.”

He added, “You can’t ask enterprises to operate with unpredictable costs or exposure. Midnight addresses both. We are building privacy in from the start.”

Reclaiming Privacy as a Right

Godsil welcomed Syed, asking about his mission as the newly appointed President of the Midnight Foundation.

Syed, said: “The Foundation’s core role is adoption. But more than that, it’s about reclaiming privacy as a human right. We’ve become used to giving it away for convenience.”

He offered a physical-world analogy. “Look at your lanyard. Sometimes you flip it over because you want to browse anonymously. When you’re ready to engage, you flip it back. That’s rational privacy. Midnight makes that possible online.”

Godsil pressed him on how the Foundation would attract developers.

“Through education, tooling, and community support,” said Syed. “We’re running hackathons, building SDKs, and offering grants. Whether you’re building on Ethereum, Cardano, or a permissioned chain, Midnight enhances what you’re doing.”

AI, Metadata, and the Dangers of Sharing Too Much

When the conversation turned to AI, Godsil invited Hoskinson to recount a particularly vivid example.

Hoskinson shared the story of a patient who had uploaded images of a rash (of a sensitive nature) to various AI platforms for diagnosis. “The results were good, but those images now live on multiple servers, forever,” he said. “With Midnight, you can use confidential computing to get the diagnosis, without sacrificing your privacy.”

Beckmann stressed the significance of metadata protection. “We’re not just protecting data. We’re protecting metadata. If someone suddenly visits the hospital five times, AI can infer a lot from that, regardless of encryption. Midnight shields against that too.”

Barak expanded on this point. “We have shielded resources that protect metadata because AI can draw dangerous conclusions just from behavioral patterns.”

Web2 Meets Web3, Without the Culture War

Godsil asked if it was easier to onboard Web2 enterprises than to change the existing culture of Web3.

Hoskinson didn’t hesitate. “Absolutely. We spent years pitching Fortune 500s. Their tech teams loved the crypto. But compliance teams said no. Too many red flags. Midnight removes those kill conditions.”

He continued: “Midnight is IBM-safe. No one gets fired for choosing it. It works for public chains and permissioned ledgers. That’s why Brave, with 84 million users, is integrating with us, for ads, VPN, and more.”

Regulators and Rationality

When Godsil asked about European regulations banning privacy coins, Hoskinson was direct. “Midnight isn’t a privacy coin. The DUST token is non-transferable. Selective disclosure lets us comply with travel rules and financial laws. Regulators love rational privacy.”

“Even the US government gets hacked,” he warned. “You should never aggregate more data than necessary. Privacy is about control, not secrecy.”

AI Agents and Confidential Guardians

Godsil then turned to the topic of AI agents and their role in privacy.

“As AI agents grow smarter,” said Beckmann, “they’ll act on your behalf. They need to retain sensitive data and act accordingly without exposing it. Midnight gives them the privacy framework to do that.”

Barak added, “Midnight’s architecture allows these agents to operate while safeguarding both content and metadata. That’s crucial for AI to be safe and usable in blockchain environments.”

Hoskinson added a personal anecdote. “People now have AI girlfriends and boyfriends. They share their lives with bots. But all that data lives on corporate servers. With Midnight, users regain control.”

What Success Looks Like

As the session neared its end, Godsil asked each panelist to define success for Midnight over the next 12 months.

“Cooperation,” said Beckmann. “Other chains using our services.”

“Metadata,” said Barak. “We protect the patterns as well as the data—because AI learns just as much from how you act as what you say.”

“Adoption,” said Syed. “Real apps, real users, real-world impact.”

“Fairness,” said Hoskinson. “No ICO, no privileged investors—just a new model where everyone plays by the same rules.”

Midnight isn’t just another blockchain. It’s a principled stand for privacy, interoperability, and fairness in a fragmented Web3 landscape.
