Parenting the AI Teenager: Privacy 2.0 Arrives with a Shot of Vodka

Privacy has long suffered from a troubled reputation. Once cast in the shadows of blockchain transparency and misunderstood technologies, it is now finding its moment — redefined, reclaimed, and reengineered for a new era. That was the message delivered in the headline talk at the “Privacy 2.0: The AI Revolution” event in Toronto, hosted by Secret Network, Silent Swap, Hacken, and DAIS.

Master of ceremonies Jillian Godsil opened the session with clarity and punch. “AI was only born two years ago but it’s not a toddler. It’s already a teenager and a rather unruly one at that,” she said. “Our job is to make sure it grows up to be a well-behaved and productive member of society. We are effectively parenting AI, but the time is measured in months not in years.”

The event set out to explore the future of AI in tandem with privacy technologies, positioning privacy not as a barrier but as the key to trust, safety, and ethical growth. As Godsil remarked, the aim of the afternoon was to look at “all things AI and privacy,” with a focus on how emerging tools could foster innovation without sacrificing individual rights.

From Bad Reputation to New Dawn

Lisa Loud, Executive Director of the Secret Network Foundation, took the stage to establish the thematic foundation. “Privacy has been given a bad reputation,” she said, tracing the evolution of the space from the early days of public blockchains which prized transparency.

“Early blockchain infrastructure really focused on transparency and building for the future, but they left out the fact that everything transparent is somewhat limited in real world adoption.”

That omission gave rise to unintended consequences. “All of these different things happened with Tornado Cash, with Monero delistings,” she noted. The reactionary stance of regulators and exchanges only further complicated the landscape.

But Loud was unequivocal in her message: it is time to relaunch the conversation. “Today we would like to launch Privacy 2.0, which is the new dawn of privacy,” she said. “The reason we’re doing this is that privacy is essential in the future if the future is dominated by AI.”

AI without privacy, she warned, is “a disaster waiting to happen.” The technology’s immense power means it could lead to either utopia or catastrophe. “We could see the world go towards a very good state, nirvana, with AI curing diseases, curing climate change. Or we could see the opposite, where AI is such a powerful technology it can take us to the brink of extinction.”

The differentiator, Loud argued, is privacy. “Privacy 2.0 is good, not criminal,” she said. “We’re going to talk about all of these different projects that are building in the privacy realm.”

The Risks of Web2 and the Promise of Private AI

The session’s keynote came from Megan Nelson, better known as Crypto Megan, a blockchain strategist, media personality, and Secret Network board member. She stepped on stage with a bottle of vodka in hand, a visual clue to the real-world use case she would later explore.

Her presentation opened with a stark reality check. “Centralized AI and privacy risk data harvesting by big tech, lack of transparency, AI model training, and user data without consent – in essence Web2 privacy is broken,” she said. “We are all essentially working for these Web2 platforms like Instagram and Facebook for free. We provide the data and they sell it back to us. That is an entirely backwards system.”

Nelson challenged the binary thought process that equates privacy with secrecy or illegality. “Transparency does not equal exposure. And privacy does not equal secrecy,” she said. “We don’t want our sensitive data leaked in the Web2 world, data about our bank accounts, our medical records, our therapists. So why should that be acceptable in Web3?”

She positioned Secret Network as the infrastructure to fix this. “Secret is the first decentralized smart contract network built on TEE technology and the decentralized confidential computing hub of Web3,” she said. “It allows us to encrypt all of this data and to essentially store it within that TEE so that the user has control.”

Importantly, she stressed the significance of control. “Only the user who has access to that viewing key can get that data,” Nelson said. “And that’s how we’re going to revolutionize this space and allow it to scale.”

From Infrastructure to Implementation

Beyond concepts and protocols, Nelson offered a real-world application of these principles through a product she helped bring to market, her very own ATH Vodka. The acronym stands for “All Time High,” and the beverage is already stocked in major retailers including Costco UK.

“This vodka is actually selling in Costco,” she said. “In a couple of weeks, you’ll be able to scan or tap the top and win anywhere from $1 to $1,000 of our token, or any token we implement.”

The key twist? Privacy. Nelson’s team is integrating Secret Network into the ATTH app to power a trustless, privacy-preserving loyalty program. “Web3 is built for loyalty,” she said. “It’s perfect for it, except for the fact that we have a lot of that sensitive user data out there and we don’t know how to safeguard it.”

With Secret, that changes. “Private rewards tracking allows customers to earn, redeem and transfer rewards without exposing amounts or activity publicly,” she explained. “Only the smart contract knows the balance and redemption logic.”

She expanded on additional privacy-powered loyalty mechanics, including secret NFTs with private metadata for VIP access and backstage passes, as well as proof-of-consumption campaigns. “Scan a bottle and the app verifies the location match without revealing GPS data,” she said.

The result is a full-cycle loyalty ecosystem where the customer is in control. “You can do all the things in a traditional loyalty system yet you can maintain the integrity of that data,” Nelson said. “And that’s the point.”

Reclaiming Agency

As the session closed, Nelson underlined the urgency of the moment. “Web3 isn’t just about money. It’s about freedom,” she said. “The true adoption requires both decentralization and privacy.”

Whether powering confidential AI, safeguarding sensitive health data, or turning vodka into a proof-of-ownership token, the message was consistent: privacy isn’t a luxury, it’s the foundation.

With Privacy 2.0 now in full view, the audience was left with a final takeaway, this teenage AI needs boundaries, and privacy may be its best teacher.
