How can we get more Women in STEM?

Many factors contribute to the low representation of women in STEM. One of the primary reasons is the lack of female role models in the industry. When young women do not see women in leadership positions or as successful scientists, engineers, or mathematicians, it can be challenging to imagine themselves in these careers. Additionally, a gender stereotype exists that suggests that women are not as capable as men in science and math, which can discourage young women from pursuing these subjects.

The lack of female representation also contributes to a culture of male dominance in STEM fields. This culture can create barriers for women and make them feel unwelcome. Women who do enter these fields may face discrimination, harassment, or feel like they have to work harder to prove their competence.

“When I was at school – back in the dark ages – we had to choose between ‘computer classes’ or honours Irish. I wanted then to be a primary school teacher and so I had no choice. 

“Fast forward to my university thesis – I hand wrote and then paid for it to be typed up. And ironically ended up being hired on the milk round to work for JP Morgan as a system analyst – all without having touched a computer at that stage.”

The high cost of education is another barrier to women entering STEM fields. Women are more likely to experience financial hardship and may not have access to the same resources as their male peers. The cost of higher education can be a deterrent, especially for women from low-income families.

To encourage young women to pursue STEM careers, efforts must be made to address the barriers that hinder their entry into the industry.
