Energy Web Launches Green Proofs of Bitcoin, a Certification for Bitcoin Miners

Energy Web, a leading non-profit in the blockchain sector, has unveiled their new initiative titled Green Proofs for Bitcoin.

The independent organization specializing in clean energy solutions, has designed a new, innovative certification system that aims to revolutionize the Bitcoin mining industry’s energy consumption practices.

The initiative seeks to establish an independent energy measurement system, offering transparency into the decarbonization efforts of miners and hosting companies while supporting the industry’s transition to net-zero emissions.

Bitcoin mining under pressure for its environmental impact

Bitcoin mining has come under fire for its substantial environmental impact caused by its massive energy consumption. To address these concerns, Energy Web’s new certification platform, shortened to GP4BTC will issue certifications to miners based on their utilization of clean energy sources.

It will provide verified data on the contributions to grid stability through demand response programs. GP4BTC aims to incentivize sustainable mining practices by offering recognition, reputational benefits and enhanced access to institutional finance.

Amy Westervelt, Senior Project Manager and head of the GP4BTC initiative at Energy Web, emphasized the need for a unified definition of sustainable mining practices:

The GP4BTC certification platform and registry is being developed in collaboration with over 35 miners, NGOs, grid operators, and other energy and crypto market participants.

It will evaluate miners based on two key metrics: the Clean Energy Score and the Grid Impact Score. These scores will take into account operational data such as location and energy consumption to assess miners’ procurement of renewable electricity.

The launch of GP4BTC features five certified miners and data centers, including Argo Blockchain, Cowa, DMG Blockchain Solutions, Hive Blockchain Technologies, and Gryphon Digital Mining.

The certified companies expressed their commitment to sustainability and commended Energy Web’s initiative for providing a standardized framework for recognizing their efforts in powering their operations with primarily carbon-neutral energy sources.

To ensure data privacy and ownership, Energy Web employs its privacy-first Green Proofs technology, allowing miners to retain full control and ownership of their data. For Bitcoin users and institutions, GP4BTC offers a comprehensive platform for discovering and validating miners’ sustainability credentials, enabling data-driven decisions regarding commercial strategies and policies.
