Sitting in a room packed full of privacy advocates and cypherpunks it is clear that there is a case for exploring the limitations of blockchain when it comes to protecting our privacy rights. My opening slide featured the Panopticon, a notion conceived by philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the late 18th century. Little did he know at the time that this circular prison structure where a single central guard could observe every inmate, without their knowledge, is now pretty much the social feed we find in all of lives today. Today most people acknowledge that they are being surveilled in some shape online. How this impacts on our digital actions and voice is both frightening and fascinating.
Every click, message and transaction is contructed within an invisible Panopticon today so how does this force us to act and react in a certain way? Are you being your true self online?
In 1993, a radical counter-movement began. Writing from a room in the San Francisco Bay Area, Eric Hughes penned a sentence in the Cypherpunk Manifesto: “Privacy is necessary for an open society in the digital age.”
Hughes and his peers, among them Timothy May and John Gilmore, recognized that in a digitized world, friction vanishes. Without intervention, the internet would become the most efficient engine for human monitoring ever devised. Hence, why Meta ads are following you around the house or Youtube is suggesting more of the same content everyday. Their conclusion was that privacy could not be secured through goodwill or law. It had to be guaranteed by mathematics.
The Code of Self-Sovereignty
The cypherpunks understood that privacy is the capacity to selectively reveal oneself to the world. It is the structural foundation of human agency. This is something that kept raising it’s head at the Cypherpunk and Ethereum gathering over the weekend. Positionning privacy as a positive force rather than something to fear. Most agreed that the visual representation of privacy behind dark walls and glasses was a bad look for promoting the concept.
When Satoshi Nakamoto released Bitcoin in 2008, it realized a core cypherpunk dream: peer-to-peer digital money operating without central intermediaries. Yet the very radical transparency of the blockchain stood in direct opposition to the value of privacy held closely by early Cypherpunk pioneers. With blockchains every transaction, wallet address, and balance was etched into a permanent public ledger, replacing institutional central banks with a glass dynamic where everyone could watch everyone else.
Rebuilding the Digital Walls
To make decentralized networks viable for real human life and commerce, modern blockchain architects have begun rebuilding privacy into the core infrastructure:
- Monero (XMR): Unlike platforms where privacy is optional, Monero enforces obfuscation by default. Through ring signatures, stealth addresses, and confidential transactions, the sender, receiver, and amount remain completely hidden.
- Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs): A pivotal mathematical breakthrough allowing one party to prove a statement is true without revealing any underlying data. You can prove you are over 21, possess sufficient funds, or hold a valid credential without handing over your identity or history.
- Secret Network: Moving beyond basic transfers, Secret Network enables privacy-preserving smart contracts. Executing computations inside secure enclaves, it allows decentralized applications to run without exposing underlying user data to node operators or the public.
- DarkFi: Positioned as an explicit spiritual heir to the early cypherpunks, DarkFi pairs zero-knowledge cryptography with anonymous routing, operating as a technological sanctuary for civil resistance and uncensored economic collaboration.
Ultimately, privacy as an engineering movement is about choice, permission, and power.
By substituting centralized watchtowers with decentralized technology the Panoticon as it has been imagined could be demolished. When visibility is no longer forced upon us individuals may regain the freedom to think, create, talk and act without the weight of an unseen observer.
