Behind the Scenes with Messari: How Mohamed Allam is Defining the Future of Decentralized Confidential Computing

When Mohamed Allam joined Messari, he wasn’t looking for a typical research analyst job. A trained AI engineer who once built satellite data prediction models for NASA competitions, he came for the intellectual challenge and because, as he puts it, “If you want to be a top research analyst in crypto, Messari is the place to be.”

It is an attitude that has served him well. Allam has just come off what he believes is Messari’s longest-ever protocol report: The Privacy Layer: Understanding the Inner Workings of Decentralized Confidential Computing (DeCC). Part One of the research was a sweeping map of the DeCC landscape, profiling the players building technology to enable computation on encrypted data.

“It was extremely technical,” he says. “Everyone we spoke to was PhD-level. It forced a deep dive, hardware, software, cryptography. It’s a space where the research is top-tier and the participants are some of the smartest people in crypto.”

What Makes Messari Stand Out

Messari has earned a reputation as the gold standard for crypto research, not just because of its data platform, but because of its ability to produce structured, deeply informed reports for institutional audiences.

“A typical Messari researcher has to be a hybrid,” says Allam. “You need to be a strong writer, a strong researcher, and a true DeGen, ie someone who’s been in the trenches and knows the space.”

It’s an approach that is clearly working. After Part One was published, Allam was surprised to find that it reached beyond the crypto community. “Microsoft and Google’s Trusted Execution Environment teams actually reached out to me after reading it,” he says. “That was interesting, it means we’re not just talking to ourselves in crypto. The report is showing up on the desks of people building the infrastructure for the next internet.”

Feedback and Lessons from Part One

The first report served as a foundational survey, explaining what DeCC is and who is building it. That was deliberate. “You need to understand the primitives before you talk about applications,” Allam notes.

But there was one key takeaway: the market cares less about cryptographic elegance than about real-world traction.

“The technology is incredible,” he says. “But until companies come and say, ‘We need to use this because it’s more efficient, more secure,’ adoption won’t accelerate. It’s more about go-to-market than just the science.”

The Focus of Part Two: AI as the Catalyst

The upcoming report, Decentralized Confidential Computing, The Trust Layer for AI and Blockchain, shifts the focus from mapping to application.

Part Two explores how DeCC is being used today, why AI makes adoption urgent, and what this means for regulators and industries worldwide.

AI is the accelerant, Allam argues: “Training and deploying models requires vast amounts of data, often proprietary or sensitive. DeCC lets you monetize data that was previously unmonetizable because of privacy restrictions. That’s the killer use case.”

The report will also highlight live deployments: IBM’s FHE trials with banks, Microsoft’s open-source Confidential Consortium Framework, ING’s ZKP mortgage processing, and healthcare collaborations that allow AI to train on sensitive datasets without breaking HIPAA or GDPR compliance.

The stakes are global. As the brief notes, whoever sets the standards for DeCC will set the rules for how AI and blockchain interact with the economy. This is not a niche cryptographic exercise, it is the foundation of trust for the digital economy.

The Human Element

For Allam, the research process is as important as the output. Messari’s work is remote-first, but collaboration is intense, and he thrives on the intellectual sparring.

“Everyone at Messari has a story,” he says. “These are some of the smartest, most committed people I’ve worked with. If we could all get in the same room for three months a year, I think we’d produce even more groundbreaking work.”

And despite his love of theory, Allam is quick to remind that crypto, like AI, is not an ivory tower pursuit. “I’m a DGen at heart,” he says. “I trade, I experiment, I get hacked like everyone else. But that gives me empathy for users. Research should connect the dots between innovation and adoption.”
