Balaji Srinivasan on Decentralized AI, Culture, Social Networks and Crypto Destiny

Listening to Balaji Srinivasan speak with a16z about the direction of AI when it comes to politics, culture or our future with Decentralized AI opens up several rooms for dialogue. In our current focus on the daily use cases of AI and the future of AGI destoying jobs is the public grasping the cultural impacts of AI infiltrating every area of society?

AI often conjures images of an all-encompassing, singular superintelligence, a digital deity akin to a God, capable of potentially leading is to an AI apocalypse. Yet, a more nuanced vision is emerging, one called polytheistic AGI, where diverse cultures cultivate their own superhuman intelligences, each embedded with unique values and mores, alongside their bespoke social networks and cryptocurrencies. This framework offers a profound re-imagining of future societies.

On expanding on-chain data. social platforms like Farcaster and MeWe, two leading decentralized social networks are at the forefront of this cultural pivot. Having onchain data that is more than just financial information is critical for this next phase of AI. As stated in the podcast cryptographically hashed posts, crypto IDs and real time onchain data ensure that the data wasn’t tampered with. Therefore AI citations become very closely connected to onchain data which is both financial and social but also proof of assertations of all kinds.

What is Polytheistic AGI?

The concept of polytheistic AGI stems from the observation that, at a minimum, there would inevitably be at least two AI’s, an American AI and Chinese AI, driven by differing ideological and developmental pathways. The hope, then, lies in the emergence of an alternative and that is decentralized open-source crypto-style AI, a trend that is already manifesting with a continuous influx of high-quality models weekly. The barriers to entry with initial high costs of training these models is reducing day by day. This plurality offers a continuous evolution of models that prevents any one entity from winning the AI race.

At the heart of this polytheistic future lies a crucial triad of technologies: social networks, cryptocurrencies, and AI.

“Polytheistic AGI I think is one very useful macro frame means every culture has their own AGI and eventually every culture has their own social network and cryptocurrency and AI you know the AI is sort of like their oracle that’s at the center of society and they’ve got their deterministic law with cryptocurrency and their probabilistic guidance with AI the social network that binds the whole thing together.”

These form what is envisioned as the reactor core of a modern network state. Something that Balaji has already been deeply embedded in exploring for several years. Within this ecosystem, AI serves as the oracle at the center, while cryptocurrency offers deterministic law, acting as the unyielding foundation of truth and verifiability. These technologies are custom-tailored for each cultural group, dictating what is allowed or disallowed, from image generation to social interactions.

One of the most compelling arguments for this symbiotic relationship is crypto’s capacity to restore reality in a world increasingly blurred by AI’s probabilistic nature. As AI becomes adept at making everything fake, from images to narratives, crypto steps in as a deterministic technology, providing what AI cannot fake: hard cryptographic equations, Bitcoin private keys, or on-chain NFTs. This inherent determinism allows crypto to provide barriers against digital fabrication.

This counteracting force is crucial for grounding information. For instance, an AI’s citations, particularly in financial contexts, can link directly to block explorers, offering cryptographically verifiable on-chain data regarding fund transfers, digital signatures and timestamps. As block space expands, this verifiability extends beyond finance to include hashed posts and crypto IDs to ascertain human origin or data integrity. While crypto excels at ensuring “end to end guarantees” once data is within the system, addressing the challenge of getting truthful information into a system, it becomes an excellent mechanism for maintaining integrity.

Furthermore, the universe’s inherent complexity and fundamental trade-offs suggest that a “plurality of models” will be necessary, as no single AI can be universally excellent at everything. Reinforcement Learning, while highly effective in specific domains, often leads to a decrease in an AI’s capability in other areas, necessitating specialized models rather than a singular generalist intelligence.

Ultimately, the confluence of decentralized AI and crypto implies a profound shift in power dynamics, impacting our social lives, money, media, manufacturing, and military. Building a secure and verifiable infrastructure for these evolving technologies is crucial. This vision moves beyond the singular, fearful narrative of AI, proposing instead a future where digital intelligence is diverse, culturally resonant, and grounded in a verifiable, deterministic reality thanks to the power of cryptocurrency.
