Unlike traditional cloud platforms built on massive server farms, Acurast is betting on the billions of mobile devices already in circulation.
“If you want to build a truly decentralized compute network, you have to start from the hardware up,” said Acurast Co-Founder Alessandro De Carli in a recent interview. “And the most decentralized computing device in the world is the mobile phone.”
Mobile-First: A Paradigm Shift
From its inception, Acurast has taken a contrarian approach to cloud infrastructure, arguing that smartphones are uniquely positioned to unlock the future of decentralized compute. Five key pillars underpin the project’s mobile-first thesis: scale, efficiency, security, connectivity, and sustainability.
With over 7 billion smartphones in existence, far outnumbering desktops and servers, Acurast’s compute network taps into unparalleled global scale. But De Carli emphasizes that this isn’t just about quantity.
“A mobile chip is way more advanced than people realize,” he noted, highlighting the power efficiency of modern phone processors that often outperform servers on a per-watt basis.
In addition, smartphones come equipped with Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), hardware security modules designed for secure transactions and private data handling. Acurast leverages these built-in safeguards to verify that compute tasks are legitimate and tamper-proof—an approach that counters issues of fake node activity seen in other decentralized networks.
Community-Powered Compute
Since the launch of its Canary Network in 2022 and a broader rollout in early 2024, Acurast has seen adoption soar. The network is accessible via a mobile app available on iOS and Android, enabling anyone to contribute unused compute power in exchange for tokenized rewards.
“This is not just theoretical anymore,” said De Carli. “Adoption is real. People are not only joining, but proudly showcasing their phone farms on social media.”
In some cases, enthusiasts have created clusters of dozens, even hundreds of old smartphones to act as local compute hubs, pushing the limits of edge processing.
According to the Acurast team, this global network now stretches across more than 115 countries, creating decentralized infrastructure even in regions traditionally underserved by cloud providers. “Even a small village in Africa could set up its own decentralized cloud computing hub,” said De Carli. “That’s game-changing.”
Building Toward Tokenization and Expansion
With momentum growing, Acurast is now preparing for a major milestone: the Token Generation Event (TGE) for its native ACU token, slated for April. The transition from the current CAcu canary rewards to full mainnet staking is expected to bring a new wave of users and partners into the ecosystem.
Beyond the TGE, Acurast plans to scale its edge computing capabilities by enabling USB-C phone clustering, a feature that allows multiple mobile devices to act in concert, handling complex workloads like AI inference with local processing power.
Sustainable Infrastructure Without the Footprint
As environmental concerns over data center energy consumption mount, Acurast presents a compelling case for greener infrastructure. By reactivating idle or discarded smartphones, even those with cracked screens, users contribute to a circular tech economy while avoiding the emissions associated with building new hardware.
“You can buy a second-hand phone for $40, and it will outperform a similarly priced server,” De Carli explained. “That’s not just efficient, it’s an unfair advantage.”

The company’s Swiss-based engineering team continues to focus on expanding partnerships, improving user experience, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in decentralized infrastructure.
