A16 2024 State of Crypto Report Finds ATH of 220m Monthly Active Addresses

In its newly released State of Crypto 2024 report, venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has revealed a record-breaking surge in cryptocurrency activity

The report highlights how decentralized infrastructure is prevailing over traditional centralized systems, especially in the wake of high-profile scandals and collapses that plagued the crypto industry over the past year.

According to the report, the failures of centralized crypto institutions have underscored the resilience and potential of decentralized systems. A16z stresses that Web3 is “more than a financial movement, it’s an evolution of the internet,” driven by decentralized blockchain networks.

Record Growth in Blockchain Activity

The 2024 report points to unprecedented growth in crypto activity, with more than 220 million blockchain addresses interacting at least once in September 2024—tripling the numbers seen at the end of 2023. A notable 29 million mobile crypto wallet users were recorded in June 2024, marking another all-time high.

The increase in blockchain usage is largely attributed to advancements in blockchain infrastructure, including the rise of Layer 1 and Layer 2 scaling solutions.

Web3 and Crypto Adoption Expanding

While decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have stabilized after their 2021 boom, Web3 applications continue to diversify. The report highlights the explosive growth in gaming, with 700 new Web3 games launched last year, driving 23 times more on-chain transactions than DeFi. A16z believes gaming will remain a key driver of blockchain adoption.

Additionally, stablecoins have emerged as one of the most widely adopted crypto products. In the second quarter of 2024, stablecoins facilitated $8.5 trillion in transactions—more than double the volume of Visa during the same period. Stablecoins’ ability to provide fast, low-cost global payments has helped them find strong product-market fit.

The Political and Technological Impact of Crypto

As the 2024 U.S. election approaches, crypto has become a key political issue, with states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin seeing a surge in interest. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) approval of Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded products (ETPs) has also broadened crypto’s reach among traditional investors.

A16z’s report further delves into the ongoing convergence of blockchain with artificial intelligence (AI), social networks, and gaming. The firm believes blockchain technology offers solutions to AI’s challenges around centralization, digital media authenticity, and compensation for creators. AI has been making the headlines recently and blockchain technology is poised to act as a key partner for organisations working with AI applications.

From finance to gaming, crypto activity this year is growing across multiple sectors. A16z remains optimistic about the future of decentralized technologies and their ability to reshape industries, especially as blockchain infrastructure becomes more scalable and efficient.
