As Web3 continues to evolve, it remains an industry marked by rapid innovation and significant gender gaps. Alina Latinina, a leading voice in the space, shares her insights into the challenges and opportunities for women in decentralized networks, offering a candid look at her leadership style and experiences in a predominantly male-dominated sector.
Latinina’s approach to leadership is rooted in emotional intelligence. “Community leadership is not about being the loudest in the room, it’s about designing the room,” she says. “Making people feel seen, considered, and safe to express themselves is key. Leadership for me is about curating a space for the community to naturally evolve within its guardrails, not imposing my own vision and expecting people to follow.”
This philosophy extends to her approach to collaboration, where creating an environment of trust and exploration is paramount. “It’s not about metrics or task-result chains, it’s about onboarding and curating, making the space an explorative one for the members to create what they want.”

Challenges of Gender and Meritocracy in Web3
Despite Web3 being described as meritocratic, Latinina believes traditional power dynamics persist.
“There’s still a culture of Web3 that’s very much a boys’ club,” she reflects. “Women were once a rare sight at conferences or hackathons, and some were even ‘paid to be there.’”
However, Latinina’s approach to these challenges has been to embrace her authentic self, blending professionalism with a playful, casual attitude. “I dress up, and if my outfit makes me think ‘will people take me seriously?’ I have to wear it. I want to enforce the perception that the way humans express themselves shouldn’t bias your perception of their skill.”
Navigating Leadership Dynamics as a Woman
Latinina notes that while she hasn’t directly experienced challenges to her authority, the dynamics shift depending on the team she’s working with. “When it’s a team of men, I notice a strong energy shift once I’m straightforward about what I want and can offer. With a women’s team, things flow more naturally.”
Her experience with authority also extends to her role in hackathons, where she first honed her leadership skills.
“Running hackathons for a long time helped me establish dominance with developers. They had to listen to me, and that helped me feel more comfortable with authority.”
In the context of Web3’s trustless environment, Latinina stresses the importance of emotional intelligence. “Trust is still at the heart of everything we do,” she says. “I cultivate trust through humor and care, not control. Trust is part of our culture at Winprivacy.”
Advice for Women in Web3
For women looking to break into Web3, Latinina’s advice is straightforward: “Jump in, even if you feel like you’re not ready. Join a hackathon, go to an event, join a community. Get rid of perfectionism and do it as you are. You’ll surprise yourself.”
She also emphasizes that Web3 needs more than just technical expertise. “We need people who can bring in a non-technical perspective. Just like you wouldn’t work on a movie if you weren’t interested in acting, we need people with diverse talents to make Web3 thrive.”
Moving Between Grassroots and Institutional Spaces
As Latinina navigates both grassroots communities and institutional spaces, she likens it to “one foot in chaos, one foot in structure.” The ability to move between these two worlds, she believes, is essential for women to help shape both realms. “It’s all about translation work,” she notes, referencing insights from Vyara Savova of EUCI.
Latinina strongly advocates for more women to be involved in the governance of Web3 and AI. “We must have women in the room when AI structures are being built. Otherwise, we will be reinforcing existing stereotypes on a larger scale.”
The Importance of Support Systems
Latinina credits the support she received from other women early in her career as instrumental in her success. “Women have pushed me to do things I was hesitant to try, cheered me on, and gave me advice. This is something we foster at Winprivacy.” Her advice to others: “Have a safe space where you can try and fail, and know that you’ll be supported no matter what.”
Three Tips for Aspiring Female Leaders in Web3
Latinina’s advice to young women looking to become leaders in Web3 is clear and actionable:
- Find Your People: “Being a lone wolf only takes you so far.”
- Find Your Way: “If you don’t see the role you want, create it. Just determination, hustle, and faith in yourself.”
- Take Care of Yourself: “It’s not a life-or-death situation unless you’re working in a hospital. Don’t compromise on your health, and remember to always have fun—it’s more productive that way.”
